International campaign for an end to the aggression against the prisoners fighti

solidaridad Oaxaca | 10.02.2009 12:06 | Oaxaca Uprising | Zapatista

In light of the repression suffered by comrades Abraham Ramirez Vázquez, from Mexico, the comrades of the Magonista Zapatista Alliance request that we put pressure on the Mexican authorities, in our own countries as well as in Mexico, to stop the constant harassment undergone by our imprisoned comrades. We therefore propose that all this week pressure is put on the Mexican embassies in Spain and other countries. The Mexican comrades, attacked time and again, know that it is very important that the government is aware of the international support that they have.

TO THE PEOPLE OF MEXICO
TO THE PEOPLE OF THE WORLD
BROTHERS EACH AND EVERY ONE

On Saturday 31 of January, at 6 in the afternoon, a strongly armed commando of Oaxacan state police entered the penitentiary of San Pedro Pochutla to take to our indigenous comrade and political prisoner Abraham Ramirez Vásquez.
Our comrade Abraham, along with other two indigenous, Juventino and Noel Garcia Cruz, have been imprisoned since the 15 of January 2005. This day the preventive police of the state of Oaxaca, opened fire against a group of more than 80 indigenous; men, women, children, old boy and who were doing tequio (community work), in the community of Santiago Xanica. In this aggression Abraham Ramirez Vásquez, Noel and Juventino Garcia Cruz were shot, leaving all three severely wounded. Since then they have been unjustly detained, victims of the prefabricated crimes of alleged homicide, attempted homicide, wounding and kidnapping. The crime of our comrades was to defend their forests and their traditional customs.

Our comrades are members of the Committee for the Defence of the Indigenous Rights of Santiago Xanica, a member organisation of the Magonista Zapatista Alliance, the Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca and adherent to The Other Campaign.

It must be emphasised that Abraham Ramirez is a man with deep human and libertarian convictions, which have impelled him on more than one occasion, to fight against the authorities of the penitentiary to make uphold the rights of the prisoners. Throughout these years, Abraham has maintained contact and written letters encouraging the people of Oaxaca to resist and to not let their dignity fail. Prison bars have not been able to silence his rebellious voice. Abraham is also direct promoter of a project of popular food in the inside the Pochutla penitentiary, because the prisoners do have no dining room, and which has brought him harassment and humiliation from the authorities of the penitentiary.
Bearing in mind the above, we ask for consciousness and solidarity from the people of Mexico and the world, and social organisations to demand that the murderer Ulises Ruiz Ortiz and the right-wing government of Calderón, cease their harassment of our comrade Abraham Ramirez Vásquez and the liberation of the political prisoners of Santiago Xanica.

- Send messages to the national government, through the embassies of Mexico in your respective countries, show your support and spread the current facts and denounce these human rights violations.
-
• Demanding that Abraham Ramírez is immeditaely returned to the Pochutla penitentiary.
• the immediate removal from office of the prison governor Juan Noel Ramírez Medina.
Responsabilizamos al director del penal, a los gobiernos de Ulises Ruiz Ortiz y de Felipe Calderón, de cualquier atentado que sufra nuestro compañero Abraham.
We hold the prison governor and the governments of Ulises Ruiz Ortiz and Felipe Calderon responsible for any attacked suffered by our comrade Abraham.
- Send notice of your actions to the signified authorities and a copy to our organisation ( codedi98@yahoo.com.mx).

SAMPLE LETTER:

To whom it may concern,
The government of Ulises Ruiz Ortiz, has violated and continues to violate the rights of members and communities pertaining to the Committee for the Defence of Indigenous Rights of Santiago Xanica (CODEDI - XANICA), using unwarranted threats, harassment, isolation, transfers and aggressions, particularly against: Abraham Ramirez Vásquez, and Noel and Juventino Garcia Cruz, political prisoners since January 2005. We consider the unwarranted transfer to a maximum security penitentiary of Abraham Ramirez Vásquez, as a provocation and an act of harassment, carried out in retaliation to the political and social work that Abraham has carried out in the penitentiary of Pochutla. This work emphasises the struggle for prisoner rights. For this reason we demand the return of Abraham to Pochutla where he is close to his family and friends. Also, we demand the removal from office of the prison governor, Juan Noel Ramirez Medina due to the constant violation of fundamental rights practiced in this penitentiary.
We hereby declare out intention to continue publicly denouncing the repressive policy of the Mexican authorities alongside those who struggle for social justice in Mexico and the world fight.
