G20 protester remanded

Jonny | 24.09.2009 14:13 | G20 London Summit

Sorry to rip this from the BBC, just thought it should be of interest - hopefully someone will supply more info soon.

Man admits arson during G20 demo

A man has admitted starting a fire at a branch of Royal Bank of Scotland during the G20 protests in London.

Lithuanian Mindaugus Lenartavicius, 21, pleaded guilty to a charge of arson at the branch in Threadneedle Street.

Lenartavicius was seen pulling out a lighter and repeatedly flicking it alight on 1 April to set window blinds on fire, Southwark crown Court heard.

His not guilty plea to a charge of being reckless as to whether life was endangered was accepted by the court.

The 21-year-old, who lived in a squat in Palmers Green, north London, has been remanded in custody until sentencing, scheduled for 23 October.

peaceful flames

24.09.2009 16:10

Setting fire to RBS blinds is peaceful and approprate action when RBS is investing in fossil fuel projects that will consign the planet to a significantly hotter future (even with flames in some places, the drying and eventual burning of the Amazon in forest fires are predicted for later this century if we don't sort this out).

It's also peaceful and appropriate action when RBS is involved in funding 'defence' companies who are responsible for consigning innocent civilians to fiery, or otherwise violent deaths. in gaza, in sri lanka, in afghanistan, in iraq, in the west bank, in the congo, etc etc.

It's also peaceful and appropriate action when RBS is supposedly now 60%+ owned by the taxpayers of this country, yet we as owners have had no opportunity to alter the obove or other investment decisions. Including the decisions to repeatedly offer disgusting and totally underserved bonuses (no one EVER deserves to be paid that much money FOR ANYTHING).

I wasn't at the G20, and I have never engaged in property destruction myself. But by Arthur Brown do I endorse this action. RBS make my blood boil - I'm almost spontaneously combusting at the thought of them ;-)

*Picket at the UK Embassy, Vilnius: "Freedom to Mindaugas Lenartavièius"*

On Monday, September 21st, lithuanian Mindaugas Lenartavièius can receive a
life sentence in the London Court. He participated in the protests against
the meeting of G-20, that happened in London on April 1st. Driven by the
spectacular fire show, Mindaugas Lenartavièius tried to set fire to the
flameproof blinds in a marble bank building. During the upheaval of April
1-2, 4 people were arrested in London, but only one of them, Mindaugas
Lenartavièius, was accused for "reckless arson" and imprisoned in the
biggest European prison for half a year. On September 21st there will be a
picket at the UK Embassy in solidarity with Mindaugas. The participants of
the picket will sign a petition demanding the discharge of Mindaugas
Lenartavièius and they will deliver it to the embassy workers.

Mindaugas Lenartavièius, who participated in the protesting crowd, who
unsuccesfully tried to set fire to the flameproof blinds with his lighter,
is charged with a very terrible crime - his action is said to have triggered
a mortal danger for lives of the people round about. Defenders of human
rights and Mindaugas'friends are sure that the eastern european squatter
living in London with no money had to become a scapegoat sitting in a prison
for life for just a bit scorched bank blinds.

Unjustly judged Mindaugas Lenartavièius is in a prison already 6 months. He
writes for his friends: "It's been half a year since I began to wait for a
trial that tries to lock me behind bars for some decades for a lighter and
flameproof bank blinds. I am sitting here because I am a squatter, I have no
work and no money. I have written three letters for my lawyer, asking him to
visit me - when in the last letter I threatened him that I would change my
evidence if he didn't come - at last he appeared. It is obvious that he does
not care about this file. I don't expect any justice".

On September 21st, the judgement day of Mindaugas, all people of good will
are called to demonstrate solidarity with Mindaugas Lenartavièius, who can
spend all his life behind bars because of absurd accusations. Come to the UK
Embassy, Antakalnio 2, Vilnius, at 12:00 PM and say, that the states that
severely punish all the rebels are often themselves unjust and worth of
punishment.
Freedom to Mindaugas Lenartavièius!

you are all crazy

24.09.2009 22:28

I remember seeing pictures on this guy in action.

He comes to this country and just starts smashing the place up like he owns it. What does he expect to happen. Justice? YES! I don't know how they do things in his country - perhaps they let people off for this kind of shit. But this is the UK, thats how we do things in the this country. Abide by the laws and customs or get your punishment.

I don't suppose anyone remembers how 53 people died on the Isle of Man due to a bit of fooling around with fire. That kind of shit still happens today and will continue to due to well meaning arsonists trying to create a bit of fear. And whats their excuse? "i'm so sorry, i didn't mean to kill 100+ people. I just wanted to start a little fire". They all say it. They are all full of remorse. They all didn't mean to kill people.

Fuck him. We have to come down hard on arsonists. Real hard. Because they are responsible for murdering 100s of people every year.
